Women in the North East are now working for free

Gender pay gap means women in the North East work for free until 31st December - 3 extra days this year

New analysis of official figures by Labour shows women in our region are being paid 81p for every pound a man earns. The revelation comes as Equal Pay Day - the day that women across the UK effectively start working for free due to the gender pay gap - comes three days earlier this year because the pay gap is back on the rise. That means women will work for free for the next 57 days.

A Labour Government will ask big companies with over 250 staff on Teesside and elsewhere to publish their average hourly pay gap each year to expose whether men and women are being paid differently for doing the same work, and whether too few women occupy senior positions.

Most people think women already have equality, that the old battles have been won long since but these shocking figures show the truth. I look forward to a Labour Government taking action to expose employers who pay men more than women. Labour will stand up for people here and across the country.



Equal Pay day marks the day each year women effectively start working for free because of the gender pay gap.

In 2013 Equal Pay Day fell on November 7th, however this year it is 3 days earlier because of a rise in the gender pay gap.

Since 2010 progress to close the pay gap has ground to a halt and is now back on the rise. According to the ONS (Office of National Statistics) Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings 2013 saw the overall pay gap rise from 19.6 to 19.7% and from 9.5 to 10.0% for full time workers.

In the North East a man earns £11.86 compared to a woman who earns £9.66 (median hourly earnings excluding overtime)

Between 1997 and 2010 the pay gap closed by almost 1/3rd.

The World Economic Forum ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2014’ published last week saw theUK fall out of the top 20 countries on gender equality - from 18th to 26th , the report cited falling female earnings and a rise in the gender pay gap as key factors.
