Discussion with Yarm School politics club about Votes at 16

I really enjoyed speaking to the politics club at Yarm School yesterday about Votes at 16. It was great to receive some messages from students later who said they enjoyed it too. Thanks for inviting me!

I have been a supporter of lowering the voting age for a long time but I want to hear from young people about what they think. If enough school students in Stockton South support this idea too then I will make build campaigning for it into my election pledges for them.

One of my members has designed this cool app which will help young people to establish when they will be able to vote for the first time under the current system and what difference votes at 16 would have made.

One young man took the test yesterday and realised that where he lives he will be 22 before he can actually vote in any election, local, national or European.

If you're at a school on Teesside try out the app to see when you will be eligible to vote:

I look forward to visiting lots of other schools in the area to talk to their young people about this idea.

16 year olds can already vote in Jersey and Guernsey, the Isle of Man and Austria. They have also been given the right to vote in the Scottish Independence Referendum later this year.
